Do you ever wonder why everyone is not made equal or does not look exactly alike?

It’s a unifying and empowering truth that regardless of our status or ethnic group, we are all made in the image of God. This common origin, like our shared humanity, equips each of us with something unique that we can steward well, whether it’s a lot or a little.

Look at the parable of the bags of gold in Matthew chapter 25. The master entrusted his servants with his wealth. To one, he gave 5 bags, to another 2 bags, and to another 1 bag, each according to their ability. Upon the master’s return, the first two servants doubled his wealth, but the one with 1 bag dug a hole and buried it. The master called that servant wicked and lazy, knowing that the master harvested where he had not sown and gathered where he had not harvested and that the servant could have at least put his wealth in the bank to receive interest.

This parable displays several concepts:

  1. Stewardship and responsibility because the master’s expectation was that they would invest and multiply what they’d been given.
  2. Faithfulness and diligence because the first 2 servants acted wisely and gained more while the third servant faced condemnation.
  3. Accountability for our actions and using our gifts wisely.
  4. This parable is a powerful motivator, reminding us that Christ will return. We should strive to hear the exact words of affirmation and reward as the good servants, ‘well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share in your master’s happiness!’ (Matthew 25:21).

What can you start doing to invest in the Kingdom of Heaven and impact others here on earth with what God has given you?

Scripture

“For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have even what they have will be taken from them.”

Matthew 25:29

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for entrusting us with tasks based on our abilities. Help us to be good stewards and faithful in tending to your work. Whether it requires much effort or little, may we love others and contribute to building your Kingdom. When transitioning from this life to eternal life, may we hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Please help us recognize our gifts and talents and use them wisely. We pray all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
