Scripture

He (Jesus) was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,…son of David, so the son of Jesse,…the son of Boaz,…the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham,…the son of Noah,…the son of Adam, the son of God.

-Luke 3:23-37 (shortened)

Devotional

As I read the Book of Luke and the genealogy of Jesus, I am encouraged by the fact that Jesus is the son of someone who was the son of someone else, and the list goes on and on. As we trace through all the fathers in Jesus’ bloodline on earth, it ultimately concludes that Jesus is God’s Son. This scripture inspires me today because, regardless of who our parents are or our family’s history, when we are saved by believing that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose on the third day with all power in His hands, we accept our identity as a child of God. No matter your bloodline, we are a son or daughter of God.

Generational curses no longer bind us, and we can adopt the mindset of Paul, who said, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me, heaven-bound in Christ Jesus” (Phillippians 3:13-14). Paul mentioned just before this that he had not already obtained all this or fully arrived at his goal, but he pressed on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of him (3:12).

So we can move forward knowing that we don’t have to be perfect. No family lineage is without its blemishes, including Jesus’ family tree!

Prayer

Father God, thank You for all You have done in our lives. No matter our family history or sinful nature, we are still Your children. May we walk boldly, embracing the freedom of being Your child, so we can share this Good News with others and help them find their way home to Heaven. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
