Despair

What is Despair?

“Despair means the complete loss or absence of hope.”- Oxford Dictionary.

Personally, I like to limit the news because it can promote despair in our lives. We constantly see negative coverage that it provides like the senseless killing of children, disasters, mass shootings, police violence, economical downfalls, just to name a few.

What has happened in your life that you feel has caused you to live in despair?

As Christians, we live in this world, but we are not a part of this world. Therefore, we cannot allow these negative things in the news to make us feel like there’s no hope or to lose faith in all humanity. Remember our faith is not in humans but in God.

We also know that people are still doing good every day! There are organizations that provide services to meet different needs like poverty, disaster relief, sex trafficking, and preventative healthcare just to name a few. We are all bound by the power of sin but yet we are all saved by Jesus Christ. So, ultimately, we have a choice to live, or not live, in despair.

Encouragement.

Jesus encouraged his own disciples to continue sharing the gospel, to be a light in a dark world, and to be salt of the earth.

What is the benefit of salt? It is used to preserve. So another question to be asked is how are we preserving others? What are we doing to be like Christ to others? Do we speak to others? Are we kind to others? It does not have to always be about money. Sometimes just a touch, looking someone in their eyes, offering a hug, or asking how you are today can go a long way.

“Sometimes it is the ones with the least that gives the most”.

Conclusion.

I encourage all of us to not be so wrapped up in ourselves that we don’t acknowledge others who may be hurting or dealing with despair as well. I encourage us to limit the things that we watch on social media and listen to in the news. We must guard our hearts and minds. Put our feelings in the proper perspective that we’re not in control of the things of this world, or other people. God is in control of all things and He gave us all free will. Even in the midst of humans’ will to sin, God is still God. Regardless of evil, God is still sovereign.

May we cast down things to the feet of Jesus and leave whatever it is there. In Jesus name, this is my prayer.
